EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In related judicial developments:

  • A US district judge has halted attempts to cut federal homeland security funding to local governments which resist specific federal immigration rules. The official ruled the case was “a further instance” of linking federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to a major US city ahead of the holiday period, alongside an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to accept a limited number of individuals from the US in exchange for increased assistance, after signing a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has initiated legal action seeking the removal of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in the capital.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil align with a broader belief in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy strategies.
