In the early hours of Saturday, reports emerged of significant blasts rocking Tehran, amid statements from Israel that it had carried out a preventative military action.
Powerful Explosions and Plumes of Smoke Reported in Central Tehran
According to eyewitness accounts, two loud blasts were heard in Tehran on Saturday. Correspondingly, columns of thick smoke were observed billowing over central and eastern districts of the city.
“The nature of these blasts indicates that this is a missile attack,” one news agency reported, though it did not immediately provide further details.
Background: Escalating Tensions and Prior Developments
This event occurs against a backdrop of sharply increased strains in the region. Major events leading up to this strike involve:
- American Naval Deployment: A massive buildup of US naval forces in the Middle East, including the repositioning of aircraft carriers.
- Nuclear Talks: Latest talks between the United States and Iranian officials on Tehran's atomic program concluded without a deal, with indications of further talks scheduled.
- Public Statements: Before the strike, a prominent American figure had labeled Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and issued threats regarding its weapons development.
- Ultimatum: Reportedly, a deadline of 10 to 15 days had been given to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or face serious repercussions.
Iranian Response
Reacting to earlier allegations, Iranian officials had accused the United States of spreading “falsehoods” about its missiles programme. Officials dismissed claims about missile development and casualty figures as baseless.
These developments remains fast-moving, with further updates anticipated as the situation develops.
